A 'little boy' suffered a head injury in an incident involving a fairground ride at a popular North Yorkshire pumpkin picking spot. The incident happened at Spilman's Farm, in Thirsk, on Friday around 7.20pm.

Paramedics from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance were called to the site, and the youngster was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough. He suffered a head injury, said a YAS spokeswoman.

A Spilman's spokesperson responded to a customer asking on its Facebook page whether the ride "the little boy fell out of" would be closed. They said: "Yes, the ride’s been closed today (Saturday) while everything’s being checked over. It was a really upsetting thing to happen, but thankfully the little boy is fine and recovering."

In another message the farm wrote: "We’re so thankful the little boy is okay. We spoke with his mum this morning and will continue to respect the family’s privacy while offering our support. The ride is currently closed while we carry out thorough checks.

"It’s been a very distressing experience for everyone, and we’re just so relieved he’s recovering."

In a further statement to Teesside Live the farm said: "Following an accident on Friday we have been in contact with the relevant authorities. The child involved was released from hospital that night. As a family farming business now in the third generation we always take our responsibility for the Health and Safety of all of our guests and staff very seriously.

"The ride involved is owned and operated by an external operator and has not/will not be used again. Out of respect for the family and the local authorities we will not be making any further comments on this matter."

An ambulance spokeswoman said: "We got a call at 19.21pm - we sent an ambulance and the air ambulance was also in attendance. A patient, a young person, was taken to James Cook University Hospital, with a head injury."

The farm is currently busy with families enjoying autumnal pumpkin picking activities popular with Teessiders and people from across the North East. This year the farm advertised over 175,000 pumpkins to be picked, along with spooky stage shows, Halloween fancy dress disco, and a fireworks display on October 25 and 26.

In the summer, thousands flock to the farm, established in 1941, to collect strawberries. It also houses a farm shop, cafe and play barn.
